Rumsey’s Swim for Mental Health Awareness

I will be swimming the lower Niagara river august 13th from the queenston boat launch to the mouth of the river meeting the lake at the white gazebo. I am expecting the swim to take me close to 4-6 hours and I won’t be taking any breaks in between.

The reason I am starting this fundraiser is to hopefully first raise money for extra mental health programs but also hoping to shed some light on the fact that there needs to be a change in the way hospitals, friends and doctors view the needs of people that are struggling.
I hope to bring a change of people becoming dependant on the persona of having to take a certain medication or depend on something that isn’t natural for yourself to make yourself think that you are okay with out dealing with the root of whatever caused the problem
I see it as a huge issue of kids getting lost in the system and having an extremely high rate of falling back in the same hole over and over again because it wasn’t dealt with in the first place
I myself have struggled for 10+ years being in and out of the hospital so many times I’ve seen the same trend in treatment.
The support will be there for you sure and the hospital will re habilitate you just back to the edge of not wanting to repeat.
A basic benefit plan that most people may not even have would be lucky to get 250-500$ for therapy that will cover 3 sessions if your lucky at 160$ an hour it would be next to impossible for someone to get the proper amount of treatment necessary.
The hospital will show support while you are there and maybe a week after.
Encouraged to take all these pills just to feel normal again. I don’t discourage taking medication by any means but I feel as though people are too comfortable making it a permanent solution
Not once have I been offered a natural treatment or have had a doctor see past just the reason for me being there and trying to talk to me about the root problem I was depressed in the first place.
I don’t see this fundraiser as much for the money aspect of wanting to bring extra money (but it’s also nice to see that people care)
But a way for me to reach out and maybe even just bring light to the average person to check up and show support to people who are closest to you and not have to worry about anyone judging or thinking of you as less of a person because u aren’t in your proper state of mind.

I also believe they’re should be more encouragement into having a basic healthy meal plan / daily workout routine outside to get set up before getting dropped back off back in the street without having any change from previous other then now it’s been re buried in your head.

Scott from NPNG fitness has definitely been a game changer for me, helping to encourage me to stay on the right path and getting healthy
Also helping to encourage me to keep working harder to get in shape for this swim.
I would encourage anyone looking for a good gym atmosphere and trainer to stop by and check out the gym.

Would love to have this swim become successful and become bigger then just myself and have it as a yearly event every august

I have lost a lot of close friends due to drug or alcohol abuse and I’ve almost lost many more.
I don’t don’t see it as the issue though.
I think people have a tunnel vision on just that being the problem rather then trying to get to the base of why someone is in the position they are in.
I hope I can rally enough people or educate to make even the slightest change on how these things are dealt with.
