For months, a scruffy and very unkempt cat quietly wandered through our backyard. He never stayed long — just long enough to eat, then disappear again. My daughter built him a small shelter under our deck, hoping it might help him survive the winter. As the cold worsened, we added a heated cat house.
He never used it.
Neighbors confirmed what we suspected: this wasn’t someone’s indoor-outdoor pet. This cat had been on his own for a very long time. Multiple families were feeding him, each giving him a different name — Gretchen, Lulu, Macy — but no one ever claimed him or had been able to trap him.
Then one night last week, everything changed.
He came to the shelter/deck severely limping. My daughter stayed with him, brought food, and turned on a small space heater as the temperature dropped dangerously low. He curled up beside it… and wouldn’t move. He couldn’t walk. Night was coming. The cold was getting worse.
We knew leaving him outside meant he might not survive.
We managed to get him into a carrier and secured an emergency vet visit the next morning. That appointment brought heartbreaking news.
First — “Gretchen” turned out to be a boy. His name is now Ollie (Oliver), that is not the heartbreaking part.
We learned how much he had been suffering in silence.
Ollie has:
Painful sores, scabs, and scars covering his body, from ear tips to tail
Suspected anemia from blood loss due to fleas
Severe infections in both ears
Lost three-quarters of one ear, likely from frostbite or fighting
Significant damage to his remaining ear
Broken teeth and dental infection, causing ongoing pain
He is intact and will need to be neutered once he is healthy enough. In short, Ollie has clearly been surviving — but not truly living — for a very long time.
The vet said he was in very rough shape.
The first 2 vet visits alone cost nearly $1000.00. Looking ahead, Ollie will need:
Dental surgery
Neutering
Medications and follow-up care
The costs add up quickly, and that’s why we’re asking for help.
Despite everything he’s endured, Ollie is incredibly gentle. He allows us to pet him. He purrs while he eats. He leans into chin scritches. Even in pain, he shows nothing but sweetness. He does give me a little hiss now and again just to remind me he is the boss!
Our goal is simple: to give Ollie safety, warmth, medical care, and love, and to eventually find a forever home.
I know times are hard. I truly do. But even $2 makes a difference. Every single donation helps relieve pain, provide care, and give this sweet boy a chance at the life he’s never had.
If you can donate, thank you.
If you can share, thank you.
And if you took the time to read Ollie’s story — thank you for seeing him.
We’ll continue to share updates as Ollie heals. This is his second chance, and we’re determined to make it count. THANK YOU!
