Yasmin's Stage 4 Breast Cancer: A story about a princess, her little knight & the frightening dragon. Why: Treatment side effects are tough When: July 31st, 2023 Urgency: Super Urgent Journey: Approx. 1-1.5 years
When I heard the words Stage 4 Breast Cancer, it felt like a nightmare. Sitting at my doctor’s office, I kept thinking, that if I closed my eyes and opened them up again, I could wake up. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a bad dream. It was my new reality. This wasn’t someone else’s story. It’s happening to me. This is my story. Every story has a hero, villain, and princess who needs saving. You would think that I was the hero in this story but in this case, I’m the princess and my knight in shining armor is a 6-year-old little boy that saved my life.
So once upon a time, the knight in shining armor was hugging the princess when his little hands felt something weird and asked, “Mama what’s this ball on your neck?” My sensitive observant little boy saved my life. Unfortunately for both the princess and her knight, the bump turned out to be a dark scary villain named Cancer. After a head and neck CT scan and two biopsies of enlarged lymph nodes, we received the worst news on July 31, 2023: Metastatic high-grade mammary carcinoma. This is really bad bad bad news guys!
The dragon of all dragons “cancer” roared at my castle and mercilessly tried to destroy my life. But our Heavenly Father gave me a gift to overcome the dragon. My son Jayden inspires me to fight and not give up! He inspires me to be strong when chemotherapy's side effects kick my butt. He inspired me to keep going when I saw the clumps of hair in the shower drain. I thought that even with the chemotherapy I would be able to keep working, go to school, and resume a somewhat normal life to support my son but boy was I very very very wrong. So here I am at 35 years old doing my first GoFundMe page. I feel vulnerable sharing such an intimate part of my story and asking people for help. Before the cancer diagnosis, working 2 to 3 jobs was necessary to help cover the extra costs related to raising a little boy diagnosed with autism. As a single mommy, it's my responsibility to love him, protect him, and provide for him.
The name Jayden means “thankful”. I’m thankful that our Father in Heaven used my little knight to find "the lump on my neck”. My mammogram results were negative, and the enlarged lymph node was the only detectable symptom that led me to seek medical help; it's strange to have a negative mammogram and a positive lymph node. That was the first miracle; finding the cancer. Connecting with an amazing team of healthcare providers was the second miracle. I cannot stop raving about my doctors, nurses, and auxiliary staff. The chemotherapy working and halting the spread of cancer was the third miracle. I'm on my 7th chemotherapy cycle, scheduled for a bilateral mastectomy on February 20th, and scheduled for radiation therapy sessions in March. The journey for both the princess and the knight is long, arduous, and challenging. But with GOD's help, your prayers, and support, you can help us defeat the big scary dragon "cancer".
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my story, share my story, and contribute financially if you feel led to do so. Please, keep us in your prayers. Jayden and I are counting on them!”
Sincerely yours,
The princess & little knight. “Yasmin and Jayden”.
