Back in 2009 a group of South Sudanese community leaders recognised that the geographical spread of its community across Australia meant that there was a need for an event that focused on a chosen pastime was necessary to keep a link amongst the families and community.
The South Sudanese Australian National Basketball Association was born and has expanded today to incorporate teams from across Australia coming together twice annually to compete for the National title from U14 – Open female and male and age groups.
The SSANBA is holding a national tournament in Adelaide in the second week of school holidays, July 2023 and the Yarra Wildbeast’s have expressed an interest to accept an offer to place 5 teams in the competition;
1 x U14 boys, 1 x U16 boys, 1 x U20 boys and 1 x open girls teams.
The trip would involve 3 days of scheduled basketball and the opportunity for young people to experience a trip interstate, visit a number of places whilst in Adelaide, see relatives and hoop.
For some, this will be their first trip out of the state and indeed the first of any type of tournament like this.
We are fundraising to cover costs of accomodation and travel for 50-60 young people and a small team of volunteer Coaches and support staff.
