Yamil's Recuperation

Donation protected
On Saturday, December 10, 2016 my family's lives changed forever.  We received a call from my brothers supervisor indicating that Yamil, as well as two other coworkers were missing.  Apparently, my brother (a draftsman) was offered to supervise the overnight shift on Friday on the Oil Rig, where two colleagues were working on a scaffold on the side of the ship.  One of the hinges from the scaffold broke, so one of the men (Brian) was going to fall and he grabbed the other (John) and they both fell.  My brother was still on the platform when he saw what happened, his first reaction was to help and see if they were hurt,  he jumped and plummeted over 130 feet (10 stories) into the ocean.  A call was received at 9:30am, they said it had been over 10 hours already since the incident and Coast Guard was going to suspend the search because of bad weather; they would return again at 1:00pm.  The 3 most agonizing hours of our lives were these hours.  At that point we were told the temperature of the water at night, plus the bad weather conditions and the time span were not a good combination.  So all we could do was pray!

A call was received at 1:12pm indicating that the Coast Guard had located Yamil along with Brian and John, and they were extracted from the water in very bad shape.   Then we were told not to call, that they were going to contact us...patience.  At 6:49 pm we were told Yamil's body went into shock and had various seizures so he was put on life support.  We very rarely experience real life miracles, but his recovery after all that has happened is very much extraordinary.  When the doctor was told that 3 men survived over 11 hours in the ocean at night he said, 'Impossible, the maximum would be 4 hours'.  Sadly, Brian passed away on his way to the hospital; he was very fragile.

In the water, Yamil had pushed John toward the ship and told him to follow the ropes. When he went to get Brian they could not make there way back towards the platform, due to the harsh weather conditions the ocean current kept pushing them further away.  Yamil found a pole in the ocean and held on with Brian for over 11 hours.

My brother has no broken bones, no head trauma, no water in his lungs, he's just very swollen and suffered trauma to the neck and right leg.  Doctors indicate that Yamil will need a lot of patience during his recovery, it's like learning to use his motor skills all over again.  He remains on the platform, which is a 3 hour helicoptor ride away.  Doctors say the next 3 days are very crucial, so he will not be trasported to land yet because the turbulence on the aircraft may affect his motor skills or extremeties permanently.  As everyone knows, our family is anxiously waiting news on where he will be transported in order to make the trip from PR (parents), Miami (Valerie) and Orlando (Anais) to either Houston or Louisiana, depending on the doctors request.  We are all available to travel anywhere to be by his side in this difficult time.  His recovery will take time, once he is stable he will need to learn how to do everything all over again.  Things like standing, walking, showering, eating, buttoning a shirt and tying his shoes will be assisted for now.  He will not be able to pick up his children for awhile.  As a result, he will need alot of help and patience from all of us.  We ask that if you would like to donate anything, anything at all, so we are able to travel and stay with Yamil in this time of need, you may do so here.  We do not want Yamil or his wife to have to worry about money at a time like this, when all that matters is his full recovery.
Thank you to all and God bless you!
