CNN Heroes 2024
Yamilée Toussaint grew up dancing and watching her father, a mechanical engineer, at work. With a love for math and science, she pursued her bachelor's degree from MIT, where she was one of only two Black women in her mechanical engineering graduating class. After teaching in Brooklyn, she saw firsthand how young girls of color often felt that STEM—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—wasn’t for them. To change this, Yamilée founded STEM From Dance in 2012, a nonprofit that empowers girls of color by integrating dance and STEM.
She turned her passion into a mission to bridge the gap for young girls who rarely see themselves represented in STEM fields.
Through choreographed dances that incorporate STEM elements, such as coding music and designing costumes that light up, we create a unique and powerful experience where girls not only learn computer science and engineering but also discover their own limitless potential. Our programs have already reached thousands of girls across the country, igniting their passion and confidence to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
But we can’t do this alone. We need YOU.
Every dollar donated goes directly towards keeping our programs free and accessible for all girls, ensuring that no family ever has to choose between opportunity and cost. Whether you contribute $5, $50, $500, or $5,000—your support will directly impact the lives of the next generation of innovators, creators, and leaders nationwide.
This is your chance to be a part of something transformative. Together, we can break down barriers and build a future where girls of color are leading in STEM fields across the globe.
Join us. Donate today, and let’s create a world where every girl can see herself as a scientist, an engineer, a tech entrepreneur—or whatever she dreams to be!
Thank you for believing in this mission and for being a champion of change. Together, we’re unstoppable!
