Hey community!!
For those who don’t know me, my name is Yajaira Luna Fleming and I will be attending Howard University [an HBCU- Historically Black College & University] this fall, 2021. YAY!! I am pursuing a major in Psychology, on a path of obtaining a Doctorate of Psychology. Of course my virgo self has a plan, but as we all know, things maayyyy shift. I am on my journey of becoming a doctor of psychology, with a focus on our children. The demand for Black, Brown, and Indigenous psychologists is unfortunately high. Among the doctors of psychology in the US, less than 5% speak Spanish, 4% are Black, and less than 1% are Indigenous. mmhhm– wow.
My family and I have worked hard for this opportunity. I come from a single parent household with a mother who has always given me the world, along with so many teachings. My mom has committed 5k annually towards my tuition and I have submitted over 20 external scholarship applications. I have secured one (YAY!) but am still waiting on several others. To date, I have received over 24k in grants and scholarships. I am still in need of $18,535 for year one and $74,140 for my four year/undergraduate degree.

A little more about myself: I am a circus artist, with a focus in contortion. I have been training since the age of 7 with Circus Juventas, and the circus arts have absolutely become a passion of mine. I created my own business in 2016, providing childcare for several families with infants to elementary aged children. It’s evolved since then, and I’ve had the chance to meet SO many amazing families. I completed my high school credits as a second year PSEO student at Concordia University and will be graduating from Central Senior High School this June. In August, I’ll be moving to Washington D.C. to study at Howard University– beginning this new journey of mine.
I’ve been raised in a BIG community, and I thank you ALL for supporting me in your own ways throughout my upbringing. As I move into this next phase, I thank you for your support however you are able to offer: financially, by sharing, or even by encouraging other young people to follow their dreams.
