Yachay Wasi
Yachay Wasi is an intercultural bilingual community school that offers a unique approach to education.
Located in Quito, Ecuador, Yachay Wasi is unique from other urban primary schools because it follows the teachings of “Ishkay Yachay.”
This means that their education combines a balance of modern and Afro-Andean indigenous knowledge. Yachay Wasi immerses their students in different languages (english, spanish, and kichwa) and familiarizes them with Andean culture through diverse and practical hands-on learning.
Unlike other school's, Yachay Wasi instills pride in their students' indigenous heritage by introducing them the language, songs, and foods of their ancestors, and centralizing their role as caretakers of the mother earth, la Pachamama.
One of the most critical components of Yachay Wasi's educational experience is students' interaction with the biodiverse educational space of the "chakra" (garden in kichwa).
Yachay Wasi receives funding from the state to pay three teachers and the service for internet connection. They rely on fundraising to pay for electricity, water, and phone bills as well as student sponsorship, school materials, and healthy snacks for students.
The economic hardship of COVID-19 is most directly felt by the lower-income, marginalized populations that make up the Yachay Wasi community. Your generosity will fuel the continued existence of a vital community resource.
