Saving Mikey

Sweet, outgoing 11-wk old Mikey got adopted by Candy and her family on Nov 16, 2019.  Just 10 days later, he came down with the deadly parvo virus. He's been fighting for his life in a 24-hr critical care veterinary hospital for about a week now. Unfortunately, he was too sick to move to a hospital that the rescue uses. Because of this, Candy's family has been hit hard with the significant financial burden of his life-saving care. Most people would have made the difficult decision to put him to sleep. Not this family. He means too much to them.

In only 10 days, Mikey wormed his way deep into the hearts of Candy, her family, and their other dog Max. Thanksgiving was not a day of joy as it can be for most of us. Candy's mom cried all day. They've visited him at the hospital every day, even watching other people's pets get well and go home while Mikey remained sick. Poor little guy just didn't get the immunity that most pups get from their mother's milk. She was stressed from being on the streets as a mother of six until being rescued and taken into foster care. And the vaccine he got at 6 weeks of age didn't get his immune system ramped up against parvo like you would hope. Already two of his litter mates succumbed to it, but Mikey is a fighter.

Yesterday brought much-needed good news:  Mikey is eating on his own now. But he still needs more time at the hospital to ensure he is stable before going home.
