Help 4 Harvey
On the evening of February 4th, Harvey McKeever, a 15 year old from Willowmavin, Victoria, had a serious motorbike accident on his family property.
He was conscious, but paralyzed from the shoulders down and was airlifted to the Royal Children's Hospital where scans led to surgery within hours of arriving.
Harvey had shattered his C4 vertebrae which was replaced by a piece of bone from his hip. Although he had not severed his spinal cord, it suffered significant trauma. The nerves in the area of injury dictate diaphragm and lung function.
Harvey turned 16 while in an induced coma in ICU.
The teenager is now making huge progress, proving he can go without a ventilator during the day and only required a bipap breathing machine to help his lungs overnight.
He has now progressed to a ward for rehab and had a wheelchair fitted with chin controls and after a 5 minute trial requested the doors to be open to leave the room for his maiden trip around the ward.
Harvey's road to recovery however is still long. But with his age, fitness, determination, motivation; not to mention the love and support from family and friends behind him, it is remarkable and inspiring. The prognosis of a full recovery is still unclear and only time will tell.
Harvey does nothing by halves, so lets hope his recovery is the same!
