Help Amanda Wayno Get Better
Hello Everyone,
My Wife Amanda Wayno is a hard working mother of two beautiful boys, Parker (5yrs) and Carter (2yrs). Not long after the birth of Carter my Computer Business was not making the money to support our family and Amanda went back to work to after years of running the business. She started work at Buffalo Wild Wings in Newport News in February of 2014 as a server waiting tables. This brought the income needed to make ends meet and to get her to and from work we put new tires on our 1998 Dodge Durango. Late, late nights and lots of time away from our family and her job was going great. In March 2013 I was struck by a driver running a red light while driving the Durango. The car was totaled and the driver of the other vehicle not ticketed. This was a devastation. Finally having a way to make money and her only form of transportation taken away with no reimbursement. Her family was there for support and a vehicle was loaned for her to go to and from work. Later a more permanent solution was from her cousin Bill to let us use his 1996 Ford Ranger. A good reliable A-B car that was hers to use until a better option came along.
Fast forward two years to now and Amanda has been promoted from a Server to a Shift Lead, to an Assistant Manager and then to a Manager. 4-5 Stores later, lots of training and driving everywhere in the little Ranger with no AC. Most nights not home until 3-5am in the morning. Still running my own business I was able to take over the household duties and care for the boys on a daily basis. Lots of tag team with the boys going to my work and staying home mornings with her. Parker started preschool last year and is finishing kindergarten this year and doing great. Carter spends most days with Daddy and growing up big getting ready for school next year. My Car accident two years ago was won at trial but appealed and will take quite some more time before we are paid for the totaled car and medical bills, etc. It has been a long time waiting to have a vehicle of her own to drive. That brings us to now.
Wednesday February 3 at 3:00pm on her way back from picking up Parker from school she was approaching the red light at Warwick and Oyster Point when struck at high speed by another Ford Ranger (2011) driven by an elderly man in his 80's. The little Ford Ranger that had served her so well for the past two years was in the blink of an eye crushed front to back and totaled. Parker was in his booster and seems to have escaped the whole ordeal unharmed. The damage was directed to the driver’s side and Amanda Wayno took the brunt of the collision. Instead of being pushed forward the truck was sandwiched between the vehicle that hit her and the other (3) cars involved in the (5) car pileup. She called me while woozy and faint very worried about our son Parker. The call I received was scary, with her crying and screaming about the accident in front of Dairy Queen and she was bleeding and glass everywhere. I grabbed Carter and locked up the shop and as fast as the speed limit let me rushed to the accident not knowing the extent of the injuries. Of course there was lots of traffic the closer I got to the accident and when passing on the other side of the road could see all of the cars piled up and the ambulances and fire and police cars. There was a stretcher at our little truck but I could make out little else. I had to pass by the accident and go down to make a u-turn to get back to her and my son. After being stuck in traffic for more than 5 mins I just parked in the median, put on my hazard lights and ran the rest of the way carrying my 2 yr old Carter to the scene. Parker was standing with the officers and Amanda was already loaded into the Ambulance on her way to Riverside ER. I grabbed what I could from the truck and ran back to the car with both boys and followed the Ambulance past the accident to be with my wife.
We waited in the ER for her to be assigned a room and after about 15 minutes met her in the back. She was in lots of pain with a neck brace on and a bloody wound to the back of her head. Her clothes had been cut off and were covered in broken glass still. She was coherent and they were getting ready to perform a CT scan and X-rays to see the extent of her injuries. At that time she was able to explain that her seat had broken in the impact and been flung into the rear window which she had broken with her head. They were unable to move her at all to inspect the wound to her head. I called Amanda's brother and her sister was notified and her sister’s husband was able to come right away and pick up both boys for the night. She was off to x-ray when I returned and I waited to find out how she was while the two police officers talked with me. The driver was going to get a summons and that gave the relief that we would not be stuck with medical bills and have totaled her cousin’s truck with no recourse. She returned from the scans with no broken bones and the neck brace was removed to inspect the wound on her head. There was large piece of glass visible on the x-ray and it had to be removed from her head with tweezers. Pain and tears and several more pieces of glass later and they were certain that they had the bulk of the glass out. The initial pain medication was wearing off and she noticed pain in her leg to go along with the pain in her neck, head, and overall aching body. They had to bring in portable x-ray named “Rocky” to check her lower left leg to see if that was broken and it was not. Several bruises indicated she had hit that leg in the accident. I had to pick a few dozen pieces of glass out of her back while in the ER and had to shake out her clothes which were inundated with small razor sharp particles. Luckily she had her clothes in a bag for work and was able to wear those out. After signing documents and insurance information and statements to the police we were finally cleared to leave after 4 hours in the ER. She finally was able to use the bathroom after having to hold it. All of the nurses and doctors were very nice and she was well taken care of. Of course that was only the beginning of the night. We had to leave the hospital with no shoes in a wheel chair as she was not steady on her feet. I had to get her home and showered as she was covered in small shards of glass still and a huge mat of dried blood on the back of her head. We more glass out of her hair before getting her dressed and into bed. I was off to fill prescriptions and pick up food. Neither of us had eaten since lunch and I was dragging. I picked up some food at her work after going to (3) different pharmacies in search of one that was open late enough and had the prescriptions she needed. It was closer to 11am by the time the prescriptions were picked up and the boys were in the car. Thank goodness for drive through pharmacies. It has been 2 days of shear pain for Amanda as each morning she awakens with her pain medication wearing off and new aches and pains in places not felt before. It is no fun at all to have to remember what pills do what and when you can take them. Not being able to get out of bed for much more then to use the bathroom and take a shower. She is unable to stand for more than a few minutes and we are headed to the doctor for a follow up tonight.
I made this GoFundMe to help us financially in a few ways. Amanda should stay home as long as she needs to recover fully. We know this is going to be hard. She brings in more money each month them my business at the moment. If she cannot work it will be very difficult to pay our bills. It will take some time to be compensated by the other drivers insurance. Because the car she was driving did not belong to us and was older and not worth as much to the insurance company in dollars we will once again be without a car for her to drive. I have an older convertible sports car but it only seats 2 and is not safe for children due to the convertible top. She could drive it to work but it needs to be fixed up and will not be a good vehicle for her as it is a manual transmission. If there is enough money raised from this to buy a car for her to drive to work that would be a godsend. Anyone that can donate any amount no matter how small would be appreciated.
Thank You
Edward Wayno
