Bessie the beagle was adopted three and a half years ago, and has brought immeasurable amounts of joy, love, peace and healing into our lives. She embodies appreciation, optimism and love. To know Bessie is to love Bessie. She flops over for a belly rub in an instant, spins in circles with excitement for her meals and has the most peaceful snout-up sniff when she is in the fresh air listening to the birds. She gets us out everyday, enjoying the beaches, parks, redwoods, West Cliff Dr. and neighborhoods of Santa Cruz (I have become a bit of a beagle paparazzi). She loves Lake Tahoe- especially all of the mountain smells (she’s a beagle), doing the par course with us and drying off on the warm rocks after a swim in the lake. She loves to gently sniff ice plant, loves Kitchen Witch Bone Broth (triple spin when that comes out) and she is always nearby to offer support with her loving eyes. She is known as Bessie, Bess, The Girl, Littles, Piglet, Biggie Smalls, The Pear, La Pera and La Gorda (we’re working on her figure). She has the cutest morning “yoga poses” including one move known simply as “Long Dog” where she slithers across the carpet on her belly with her tail thumping simultaneously. She is love.
Two days ago, she started to show signs of extreme pain and Monday night, 10/12, she took a turn for the worse. Within 24 hours, she went from being able to gallop down the hall and hop up onto the couch or into the car to not being able to walk and collapsing when she tried to stand. As it turns out, Bessie has a herniated disc in her neck with a triangular piece that is pushing into her spinal cord which requires a neurosurgery that she is having done today. She began to show signs of paralysis, dragging her two front paws- unaware of them, and it has been heart wrenching watching her in so much pain. The surgery that she is having done has a very good recovery rate and helps tremendously with the pain. She/we humbly request your help.
As some of you know, this is Bessie’s second major surgery in eight months, and the costs have been overwhelming. Today’s surgery plus the emergency visit on Monday night and the MRI yesterday will total between $8401 and $9417 (they gave us a low and a high estimate). We didn’t expect this cost, and we both feel a little bit awkward asking this way. If you are able, please consider making a donation for Bessie- anything helps and is greatly appreciated. We want to be completely transparent with where all donations go, and if we reach our goal, the account will be closed. Anthony and I have, thus far, been splitting the bills, so donations would be helping both of us. Anthony started out as Bessie’s God Papa, but he truly is Bessie’s Beagle Papa now. We both love her so much.
With grateful hearts, thank you for your consideration. The love for pets runs deep.
With sincere appreciation,
Liv, Anthony & Bessie
