Diana's Wish for Better Hearing
Donation protected
My name is Diana Van Tiel and I work in the healthcare industry, where communication is a huge requirement. I am constantly in meetings with members of the community, patients, physicians and others that want to make a difference in healthcare.
When I was younger, I severely damaged one ear drum during a scuba diving accident. It was soon after that I began to notice the constant drone of tinnitus and worse yet, I wasn’t able to hear clearly any longer. I managed this by trying to locate myself close to a speaker, which allowed me to watch their mouths while speaking but doing this, I would easily mistake what was being said to me.
Now as the years have passed, what was a mild hearing problem has become more moderate as I am constantly asking people to repeat themselves or I appear to ignore them altogether as I don’t hear them unless they are in close proximity to me.
Having just recently started a new position, I have noticed that I can no longer ignore this problem. I am dealing with new people in new situations, and I can no longer afford to “guess” or fill in the blanks of what it is that I am not hearing. As a single mom and a dedicated, conscientious employee, my job is very important to me and I want to do the absolute best that I can, but this is hindering me in that objective.
I have worked all my life but find myself in a position that I do not have the benefits in order for me to afford hearing aids. This is the reason that I am reaching out to you, total strangers and friends, in the hopes that someone can relate to my struggle and help me. It would not only be the gift of hearing, but would guarantee that I can continue to be a valued employee supporting myself. I truly need your help and am so extremely grateful to anything that you could give. This means the world to me and I would never be able to express enough my deep gratitude to you other than to thank you from the depth of my heart for your help.
The hearing aids that I require cost $2500. Should I find myself in a position of exceeding this goal, I will donate the remaining funds to a charity that assists with the hearing impaired.
Thank you to all that may consider donating and I hope that I encourage others that may walk in my shoes, to do something to better their quality of life. The gift of hearing is nothing to take for granted!
