Help Save My Mom From Homelessness

Hello everyone! I’m starting this campaign to help raise money for my mother, so she won’t have to be homeless at the end of this month.

She receives disability payments (SSDI - disability she paid into while working since she was 11), but anyone familiar with our government’s aid systems would know this is hardly a liveable amount and is not comparable to today’s cost of living. She gets $787 SSDI and $16 SSI a month - a one bedroom in her area is around $630 to $650 a month. This leaves practically nothing for electric expense, food or medication which she cannot go without.

On top of the small amount she gets from that, she was employed 7 hours per week, the most she could work, but has been unable even to continue that due to COVID-19. As someone aged 63 with COPD, she is a high risk person and cannot risk exposure.

She currently lives in a shared housing situation, the only safe place available in the area affordable to her. She's been there 5 years now and even took up cleaning up after everyone in order to save on rent. But now the landlord is selling the house and she must leave by the end of the month. She has qualified for subsidized housing for over 20 years but has tried her best to make it on her own. She applied recently for subsidized housing, but the wait list is 6 months to a year, if not closed indefinitely.

At the end of this month, she will be forced out of her home amid a pandemic and has nowhere to go. She has told me she is looking for a place to pitch a tent. I do not have space where I live and face eviction myself if I exceed the capacity of my rental unit, and I do not make enough money myself to cover her, having just lost my job myself due to closures.

This money would aid her in paying rent for a year and allow her to have a safe place to live while she awaits a subsidized apartment unit.

My mother is a kind and compassionate person, and helps those who need it when she can - but as of now, she needs your help.
