Killian’s Recovery

Hello, my name is Skye Garnhart. My son Killian is a wonderful, happy 5-year-old little boy who touches the lives of everyone he meets. When he was in utero, he was diagnosed with semi-lobar holoprosencephaly, which affects the frontal lobes of his brain. This has led to complications throughout his life, including several surgeries. However, his biggest challenge has always been his cerebral palsy diagnosis, where his muscles are completely rigid and spastic all the time, which means he can't walk, sit up, or even have his diaper changed without having painful spasms.

Recently, things have been a little harder for Killian as he cannot even go to preschool and play without issues, sit in his chairs/wheelchairs without issues, and is not able to use his gait trainer without having issues. With this being said, the doctors have recommended that we do an invasive spinal surgery called a dorsal rhizotomy since we have exhausted all other options at this point. This surgery will allow Killian range of motion of his lower half and will hopefully allow him to sit in his wheelchair and learn some stability again before August when he will go to Kindergarten. After the surgery, he will be in the PICU at Geisinger Danville for a week and then Hershey Medical Center for two more weeks of intensive rehab. His father and I will be driving back and forth quite frequently as we have other children at home that need us as well. We are asking for help to lessen this financial burden as we navigate paying for gas, loss of income due to us not being able to work, and paying for meals on the go and at the hospital.
