On Saturday May 10th at 11 AM, our beloved dog pepper fell as she excitedly attempted to leap up 3 stairs onto our deck, resulting in a severe injury to her left-rear leg. Pepper is a 10 year old hound mix, and has been inseparable from my partner and I since the day she became a part of our family.
The initial X-rays reveal she has a broken femur, which has splintered off and is poking into her knee tissue, causing her an immense amount of pain. There are no veterinary orthopedic surgeons locally in Humboldt, so we will have to travel to Santa Rosa or Southern Oregon for Pepper's emergency surgery tomorrow (Monday, May 12th). The cost of surgery will likely be $8,000 - $10,000, not including travel expenses. This unexpected situation has been emotionally taxing for Pepper and our family, and the financial burden of surgical costs only makes it worse. Pepper still has so much life to live, and this operation is vital in giving her an opportunity to have the quality of life she deserves as she enters into her golden years.
