Dear family and friends,
Writing these words is very hard, as it forces me to face the reality of our family's circumstances. Asking for help is not easy.
As most of you may already know, this past February my Dad has been diagnosed with A.L.S. (Amytrophic Lateral Sclerosis). Commonly known as Lou Gherigs disease, A.L.S. is a progressive neuromuscular degenerative illness that unfortunately has no cure.
It affects the nerves and muscles responsible for talking, walking, eating and breathing. Eventually A.L.S. will rob my Dad of his dignity and independence in the most basic of self care and communication. The mind will remain unchanged trapping him in a body that is slowly giving up and shutting down.
Today my Dad finds challenge in what we consider simple daily tasks such as doing up buttons, zippers, using eating utensils, and even chewing/swallowing certain foods. His speech has become greatly affected making communication frustratingly difficult for him.
Everyday this horrible disease progresses, making every day harder and more challenging on him. 24 hour full time dependence on a care giver and medical equipment will be inevitable in my Dad's future in order to survive.
I am starting this fund to support my Mom (Dad's primary care giver), and to support my Dad through this battle. I want my Dad to live his life with as much comfort as possible while fighting this degradating disease. In order to ease the burden of A.L.S. on my parents there will be a need for home modifications in the urgent future.
Proceeds of this fund will go towards:
*converting their master bath into one that is barrier free; complete with roll in shower
*widening door frames
*and installing a ramp for entrance to and exit from the house.
Please help them in any way you can. Your support is greatly appreciated. Thank you will never be enough!
