Toby Needs Surgery

My spunky, bratty, cuddliest kitty best friend of 11 years, Toby, who just turned 12, was in the ICU with a urinary tract obstruction in March 2021. He has a stone in his bladder that is too large to pass on its own and is not dissolvable through changing his diet.

 

For the short term, at the time he was blocked to get him stabilized the stone was pushed back up into his bladder.

He was placed on IV fluids, pain meds, and a urinary catheter for 24 hours. Overnight he had some blood in his urine and his urine output was low. His kidney levels remained elevated but had improved slowly. After the 24 hours the catheter was pulled. No more blood was in his urine. He needed his urine output and kidney levels normalized before he could come home. He has been doing well since recovering from his ICU stay.

 

The possibility of him suffering that agony all over again and the elevated risk of him dying if he blocks again breaks my heart.

 

Since the stone cannot be flushed out, the obstruction is very likely to happen again. At that time he would need a more extensive corrective surgery and has a higher risk for permanent kidney damage. The only way to ensure he won't become blocked again is to have the stone surgically removed. 

 

So far, the cost for his hospitalization, subsequent aftercare, vet visits for xrays, bloodwork, urinary diet food for 2 months with no improvement, and now the consult, xrays and bloodwork done for the less invasive surgical option is around $5,000. The surgery will cost another $5,000 not including if he needs to stay overnight or any of the aftercare and follow-up vet visits.

 

Toby is in good health otherwise and has been given the green light to proceed with having the procedure.
