Ziggy needs surgery

Ziggy Stardust, or just Ziggy or ZigZig as I call him, is just over a year and a half old.  He is a pure bread Maine Coon from Nacoonzi.  Ziggy has been having issues with his legs for a while and a plan of treatment has finally been determined, but it involves expensive surgery.

FHO can be performed on pets of any age and with any severity of hip dysplasia or injury. The procedure involves removing the femoral head (ball), thus creating a 'false' joint made up of soft scar-like tissue separating the pelvis and femur bone with no remaining bony attachment. This procedure is a salvage procedure as it preserves limb function at the compromise of some physical abilities. The FHO provides better results in small and medium sized pets versus the larger or giant breeds and/or athletic pets. It is, however, an economical way to preserve use of the limb and decrease the pain associated with hip dysplasia.

Dr. Wooldridge did an orthopedic exam and reviewed prior x-rays. He does not think Ziggy has an ACL tear of the left knee which another vet thought was the issue. It appears Ziggy has a defective ankle which is likely causing the instability. He will do more x-ray views under anesthesia next week during surgery, details below about that. If additional views show us more, we will decide that day if there is time to fix it or what can be done to fix it, if anything. Right now we need to fix the right leg.

The right rear hip is causing him significant pain the last few weeks. It appears there is something that happened with the growth plate, The result of the growth plate injury is that the blood supply to the ball part of his femur that fits into the hip socket has been reduced causing the bone to lose some mass, as I understand it . Dr, W will be doing surgery to cut off the ball part of the bone. Felines heal from this well, as their muscles will mend and stabilize the joint over time. He should not have long term issues with it, thank heavens. Recovery is to keep him quiet with no jumping or sudden movements for a few weeks. Then he can start walking more. I'll know more about the recovery once surgery is done. He will come home the same day.

I'm a little stressed about the financial part of this. Estimate is around $6,000. That is going to be a stretch, but between my tax refund and a small bonus, I should be able to come up with a at least half of it.

Ziggy is a young cat at just over a year and half and he weighs 20 lbs. I'm praying he bounces back from this and has a long and relatively pain free life, lord willing.
