My beloved Hibou has been diagnosed with feline infectious peritonitis (FIP),which is a devastating condition that attacks his immune and central nervous systems. It is fast,
cruel, incurable, and fatal. Hibou is 6 months old.
In recent years, a medication has been developed by veterinary scientist Dr Niels
Penderson (UC Davis) to treat cats with FIP. The medication, GS-441524, has so far
shown remarkable promise. This medication is not yet FDA approved but is available
through amazing networks of compassionate people who have experience with FIP.
It is his only hope for recovery and survival.
Hibou has to take the medicine daily for 12 weeks. This requires daily injections (given by me) and Hibou’s patience, tolerance and endurance. Hibou also is taking steroids
and antibiotics, as we have a wonderful veterinary team doing all they can to support
his recovery. The medication is extremely expensive, and he is worth every penny, every effort, everything I’ve got.
We have begun treatment and it has restored some of his appetite, energy, and
delightful, loving personality. In the 2 weeks since his diagnosis, Hibou’s worst
symptom is ataxia, and he has mostly lost his ability to jump and walk. He is very
wobbly and falls a lot, and though he takes breaks to gather his strength every few step-and-flops, he still gets around our apartment. It is mostly heartbreaking to witness, but I am so proud of him that he keeps on! Every day we are adapting together. Our
wonderful veterinary assistant suggested to me to try to see all of him, not just his
struggles and illness; this helped move me from despair to pure love and radical hope.
His sweet and loyal companion, Rosey, stays close by him and engages him with toys
and affection in ways that he can participate in and enjoy. She and I are doing
everything we can to keep him happy and comfortable while the medicine and his
warrior spirit fight to heal him.
I humbly ask, if it is within your means to do so, to please consider making a
contribution to the cost of his treatment. Any amount is helpful and is profoundly,
deeply appreciated. Certainly, all prayers and healing wishes are graciously welcome!
Fred Rogers said that his mother told him when something awful happens, look for the helpers. That's all I've been doing, and you are everywhere, I see you, I feel you. Thank you, thank you, thank you for helping Hibou, and for helping me and Rosey. Special
thank you to our veterinary team at VERG in Brooklyn, The No Kill Project, the FIP
warrior Facebook group, my dear friend Lauren, and to our friends for walking us through this.
