Michelle's Stanford Fellowship

Donation protected
My name is Michelle Chu and I am currently completing my last semester of my undergraduate studies at San Francisco State University to obtain my B.A degree in General Biology. I was accepted to be a fellow for COMET, one of Stanford’s most competitive post-baccalaureate programs, which gives highly motivated pre-health students the opportunity to be trained in medical terminology and chart transcription. I was also one of two recipients that received their merit scholarship which will cover half of my fellowship fees. This opportunity will allow me to work side-by-side with faculty physicians as certified medical scriber seeing patients at Stanford. Being a part of this fellowship will teach me how to directly interact with patients, develop interpersonal and leadership skills, and learn the process of diagnosis and treatment to become a better clinician in the future.

Being a first-generation college student of a low-income family background and previously undocumented, my experiences gave me the strength and determination to pursue a higher education to become a successful Nurse Practitioner. I want to become a nurse practitioner because I want to provide quality health care for patients who cannot afford it by providing them the necessary preventative care. Also, with my multi-cultural background and bilingual skills, I want to be the health care provider that will represent the minority community to ensure that they receive the care that they deserve.

Throughout the six years that I was an undocumented student, I learned to be resilient regardless of the financial, academic, and legal obstacles that I faced. Due to my legal status I was denied many invaluable academic opportunities, yet it never stopped me from believing in my potential. I never saw myself as disadvantaged, instead it helped me become independent and passionate about helping underserved communities.

The combination of my activism and volunteer work in the health care field has proven to me that I am committed to my community and I will not stop until I create the change that I want to see. So please, help me on this journey as I get closer to reaching my goals.
