My name is Conall Walsh, and I recently started teaching a Rock Band class at Southwest Detroit Lighthouse Charter Academy. It's a new class created by me and SDLCA's music teacher, Melissa Roberts, as a part of an arts-infused after school program to further introduce kids to the arts/music because we believe it is essential to a child's development and education to have music in their lives. 11 students, grades 2-7, have signed up because they all want to be in a band, but not all of them come from families that can afford instruments.
The money from this campaign will help outfit the students with their instruments and necessary equipment, and help to fund a field trip to the Motown Museum so they can learn the roots of their hometown music scene.
The class has already begun, so the sooner we can put instruments in the hands of these students, the better.
I grew up playing music in bands, and it changed my life. I've connected with so many people over time through music, and I want to give the same opportunity to these students. You can help change their lives.
