Climbing Kilimanjaro for Milford Care Centre
This September, I will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. I've been trying to organise this trip since 2019, but unfortunately, it couldn't go ahead with covid restrictions.
Now the window is open, so myself & 14 other climbers will be taking on the challenge.
Mt. Kilimanjaro at height of 5,895 metres or 19,341 feet above sea level is the highest mountain in Africa and also is the highest free-standing mountain in the world with its three volcanic cones, Kibo – the summit. The other two cones are Mawenzi and Shira. Mt. Kilimanjaro the status of being one of the “Seven Summits” – the highest mountain on each of the seven continents.
The climb itself should take approximately 7/8days to reach the summit as you have to descend after each ascent in order to help the body become used to the lower oxygen levels. We pass through 4 different climates Rainforest (dense vegetation +20degrees), Moorlands (upland moors +18degees) & Alpine Desert (stone/lava desert -10degrees before eventually getting to Artic Summit (-25degrees). A bit like Ireland to be fair.
Summit night should take approximately 14hours leaving at 12 midnight after I've had my coffee but here are some of the challenges I'll face on the journey:
High UV levels from the sun, so we'll need to stay covered up
Extreme altitude above 5,800m/ 19,000 feet
The biggest summit day of probably my life! Going up 1,245m/ 4,084 feet and down 2,795m/ 9,169 feet.
Physical fatigue from multi-day hiking
Lack of sleep
Dehydration, therefore, we'll need to be drinking 5 litres or more of water per day
I'd like to raise some money in aid of Milford Care Center and every donation will help. I have received sponsorship already from Master Chefs so ALL money raised through this platform will be given directly to the Milford Care Center.
I'm sure everyone is aware of the fantastic work they do and the incredible service that they provide daily. But here is an overview...
Milford Care Centre: Milford Care Centre is not just a Hospice Inpatient Unit, we provide multiple services to our community. These include Hospice at Home services, a Nursing Home, Day Care for both the Older Person and people with palliative care needs. In order to maintain services at levels capable of responding to the ever growing needs, there continues to be a significant reliance on fundraising support to make up the shortfall necessary to sustain the provision of this high quality of care on offer at Milford Hospice.
Your Donations will help and give me the encouragement to reach the summit and feel proud accomplishing something which 50% of people who attempt it, do not manage to achieve.
Thank you for all your support & donations!
