Kyle had been sick for almost a month, starting the second week of October. He does not have health insurance, so he went to an urgent care center after two and a half weeks of nausea and vomiting and other symptoms and was misdiagnosed. The next week he was barely able to make it through the week at work. His symptoms were persistent throughout the entire week, and that Thursday afternoon his feet and ankles began to swell.
Monday morning he finally decided to go the ER at Piedmont Henry Hospital and they immediately took him back because of the swelling and did and EKG and a chest x-ray to check for congestive heart failure. The x-ray confirmed the congestive heart failure and and they admitted him into the hospital that Monday. It took them the rest of the week of testing and procedures to diagnose him with congestive heart failure and dilated cardiomyopathy.
Congestive heart failure (CHF) is defined as a weakness of the heart that leads to a buildup of fluid in the lungs and surrounding body tissues.
Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a condition in which the heart's ability to pump blood is decreased because the heart's main pumping chamber, the left ventricle, is enlarged and weakened.
His heart is now only pumping at 8% and he has to continuously wear a Life Vest with a heart monitor and a defibrillator in it, due to his high risk of sudden cardiac death. He is now considered completely disabled, and has applied for disability but it will take 4-6 months for him to get an answer. He is only 30 and had none of the normal risk factors for these conditions and this has come as an unexpected shock to our family.
With Kyle not having health insurance, living expenses, us having 3 children and the upcoming holidays we are devastated. Our family needs all the extra help we can get. If you find it in your heart to donate and help our family get through this hard time we will forever be grateful.
