About “Fandom for Rainne”
One of the primary reasons for becoming involved in a fandom is the opportunity to get to know other people who share the same interest as you, to join a community, one that cares passionately about its subject, whether that be a television show or a movie franchise, a book or a comic series. While initially this care focuses upon the media in question, as time passes, this care and passion extends to the people themselves. Fandom allows us to create relationships, both platonic and romantic, that last long after the television show draws to a close or the book series ends.
This is the genesis of “Fandom for Rainne.” This fundraiser is designed to help Rainne Cassidy, whose mother has recently been diagnosed with Stage IV Colon Cancer. If you know anything about the healthcare system in America, you know that it is absurdly expensive (only in America can you create a plausible television show like Breaking Bad in which the main character starts making drugs because he cannot otherwise pay for his cancer treatments). Health insurance does not completely cover the medical bills themselves, much less the additional expenses that accrue, such as motel stays for extended hospital visits, gas for trips to and from the hospital, food and other supplies, and, often, the day-to-day bills that one struggles to cover due to time taken off of work to be with loved ones and care for them in their recovery.
How we intend to raise funds for Rainne is by creating a compilation of fanfic, original fic, fan art, and original art that we will “gift” to those who donate. Absolutely all of the donated funds will be given to Rainne and her mother. You can participate by contributing to the compilation, by donating funds to Rainne, or by both contributing and donating. Both those who contribute to the compilation and those who donate will be “gifted” the compilation upon its completion.
