A little over two years ago, I experienced a relatively minor stroke - it could have been worse, but even the minor stroke left me unable to work at my former job (I was working at database management for a start-up with a proprietary data management program). I applied for disabilty, but am currently in disabilty purgatory, waiting (and waiting!) for my hearing to be scheduled. Also, since I'm applying for disability, I'm not supposed to be working at anything - even if I could come up with something I could do in my "limited" state, that's a no-no. They don't really say how you're supposed to survive this "waiting" period. Meanwhile, my wife has been the sole breadwinner, and recently, the small start-up she's been working for has started experiencing problems and her income has been slashed significantly. 

Any funds received will go to cover medical expenses (as in our medical insurance, prescriptions and co-pays for doctor visits), household expenses (including feeding our three cats), phone/internet bill (which we need for work) and the like. We are thankfully able to qualify for "food stamps," and that's a BIG help! But a lot of things you normally buy at the store (napkins, cat food) aren't covered.  We won't be taking any cruises or dining out at fancy hotspots!
