Maria Fehrs surgery is planned for Friday May 15th

On behalf of Peter and Maria Fehr. I Jake fehr have made contact with a surgeon in Mérida, Mexico. He specializes in cataracts and glaucoma.These are the two problems my mother has. My wife, Anna and I will be taking Mom and Dad to Mexico and staying there with them for a total of 3 weeks so that her eyes are healed enough so we can fly again

Glaucoma causes a person to first lose vision at the outer edges. Then the field of vision becomes narrower and narrower until, without treatment, a person can eventually lose all sight. Cataracts make vision cloudy and unclear. At the moment, my mother can only see through a small area in the center. It is almost as if she were looking through a narrow tube. And even that is very blurry, like looking through thick fog.

The doctor’s plan is to stop the glaucoma so that it does not get worse and to remove the cataract. If the surgery goes well, the area she can still see will remain the same size (the “tube” will not get smaller), but the vision within it should become much clearer. This means: the damage from glaucoma cannot be reversed, but it can be stopped. By removing the cataract, she will be able to see clearly again in the healthy part of the eye.

ich bin Jake Fehr, der Sohn von Peter und Maria Fehr. Ich habe Kontakt mit einem Chirurgen in Mérida, Mexiko. Er ist spezialisiert auf Katarakt und Glaukom. Das sind die beiden Probleme, die meine Mutter hat.

Glaukom macht, dass man zuerst an den Rändern schlechter sieht. Dann wird das Sehen immer enger, bis man ohne Behandlung am Ende nichts mehr sehen kann. Katarakt macht das Sehen trüb und unscharf. Im Moment kann meine Mutter nur noch durch einen kleinen Bereich in der Mitte sehen. Es ist fast so, als würde sie durch ein schmales Rohr schauen. Und selbst das ist sehr verschwommen, wie durch dicken Nebel.

Der Plan vom Arzt ist, das Glaukom zu stoppen, damit es nicht schlimmer wird, und den Katarakt zu entfernen. Wenn die Operation gut verläuft, bleibt der Bereich, den sie noch sehen kann, gleich groß (das „Rohr“ wird nicht kleiner), aber das Sehen darin soll viel klarer werden. Das bedeutet: Der Schaden vom Glaukom kann nicht rückgängig gemacht werden, aber er kann gestoppt werden. Durch das Entfernen des Katarakts kann sie in dem gesunden Teil des Auges wieder klar sehen.
