Odyssey of the Mind World Finals here we come!!!
Two teams consisting of 14 kids and 4 coaches from Dickerson Middle School have worked on long-term problems and trained for spontaneous problem-solving all school year, meeting 3 times per week to prepare for competition. Both teams successfully competed at the North Georgia Regional competition and then placed at the Georgia state competition, qualifying the teams to participate in the World Finals! However, it is costly to attend and they need help to attend. Please consider helping to fund the teams.
Odyssey of the Mind (OM) is a creative problem-solving program where team members present their solution at a competition to a predefined long-term problem that takes many months to complete and involves writing, design, construction, and theatrical performance. A spontaneous portion of the competition has the team also generate solutions to a problem they have not seen before.
Dickerson's two OM teams are competing in the Problem 1, "Pirates and the Treasure" vehicle problem, and Problem 2, "Because iCan" Rube Goldberg machine competitions.
Problem 1 Team Members are:
Sa'id Alexander
Shriyan Gandhi
Josh Loggins
Gabriel Parrish
Katarina Parrish
Ian Thigpen
Vivian White
Problem 2 Team Members are:
Harper Cornwall
Elliot Davies
Katherine Davies
Stella Figueroa
Felix Figueroa
Anand Mehta
Rebecca Sugar
At the Georgia state finals competition on March 4, these teams finished 1st place in the "Pirate's and the Treasure" and 2nd place in the "Because iCan" competitions.
Costs for the World Finals include the registration, lodging, meals, travel, and transportation of props.
Registration, lodging, and meals for the teams cost $650 per team member and coaches, which is 18x650=$11,700
For transportation of props, we have rented a truck for Regionals, State, and World competition = $3000
For travel, each team member is flying or driving which is approximately $200 per team member and coach (18x200) = $3600
These middle schoolers have learned so much about working together as a team to solve challenging problems and have made friendships along the way. They are making special memories that will last a lifetime while getting a real experience with STEAM project work.
We are asking for your financial support for the Dickerson OM team for their World Finals trip. Please contribute what you can to sponsor their OM World Finals competition.
