We Must Move (Nous Devons Déménager)

Hi everyone. My name is AnnMarie Tornabene- Boivin and I am an artist from New York who moved to France 10 years ago to marry Gilles, my French husband. As much as that sounds like a fairy-tale come true, and in many ways it has been, there has been constant hardships especially where money is concerned. Never having learned another language in my life, I, to this day, struggle with learning French. Yes, thankfully with lessons, constant immersion by living here, plus with my work and social interactions, I have progressed but it is always a struggle, especially with understanding everything someone is saying when they speak!

Having said that, in many areas, I am thriving. I work regularly (with the school calendar) as an artists' model which has been my main profession for more than 28 years and much of that work has been with schools and ateliers that I began with here in France 10 years ago. I have already been in several photography exhibitions and my photographic work has never stopped. On a social level, though I have very few friends here, I have met and am in contact regularly with so many warm people through my job plus I have always been able to be somewhat independent in terms of doing things alone and I have been able to continue to do so here in France.

Of course, though, it is not without more than thanks to my wonderful husband for his constant help, love, patience and support especially through extremely difficult and stressful times (like with French administration!) He has been my rock, my constant.

As for his story - Gilles is an audiovisual technician/specialist in the world of post-production who has worked on films, concerts, commercials and more including the two major Asterix animated movies. After spending more than 25 years in the business full-time, he decided to add another feather in his cap by becoming a professional translator since he had spent so many years already doing so for the company he worked for. After his professional coursework and receiving a diploma with distinction, there was a sudden hard hit with A.I. taking over the translation industry in such a major way that he was not able to get enough work to sustain us. He is still an audiovisual technician but now on a freelance basis, however. He works regularly, still, and for two companies and he receives special benefits as a freelancer in the arts/entertainment industry. However, he is working less than he did before while my income continues to be marginal.

Having said that, we both work extremely hard and I have and I continue each day to work at all of my endeavors, trying very hard to do what I can inside my artistic niche and to make as much money as I can to contribute to our living.

With all that I have said, over the last 2 1/2 years, our financial troubles hit an all-time high with daily life expenses going up and when Gilles was in the midst of the change of his professional life, the money situation was so bad that we were on the verge of being forced out of our apartment by our landlord but we managed over that time to take care of serious debts focusing as much as possible on spending what we must but it is really not getting that much better. The rent is being paid, though, which is the most important but can not continue, as is.

It was at that time that we filed for social housing. The system is stressful in itself - it's a lottery system with some strange algorithm built in so, on their site, there is a list of offerings in and around the towns/regions that you choose when you create your file. We could only bid on one apartment at a time and wait for a response. We could see how many others have bid on that apartment and cancel if the amount of candidates was so high that we know we would not have a chance. We have bid on apartments with 250 candidates! So then we would cancel, move on to the next and if we found one that had a small amount of candidates, we stayed with that and would wait yet again. And then after 2 weeks from the deadline, we would be refused (no reason given) we went to the next.

For almost 2 years, we have done all this with great disappointments, sadness and anguish but FINALLY we got an apartment!! It's in a town a bit south from us (Brétigny-sur-Orge) but still close enough for us to work in and around Paris. In fact, the train station is only a few minutes walk from our place and there are buses with a stop right outside of our complex.

While this is great news, the rather small apartment is an empty shell with ONLY the toilet, shower, bathroom sink and kitchen sink. We have had to replace our refrigerator for some time now, and we never had a working oven before so we will have to purchase these things and a washing machine as the kitchen is so tiny, it will not accomodate the one we have now. We also have to purchase/acquire several other pieces of furniture simply because the few other essentials we need are so old, they are not worth even moving.

Then there is also the moving van with the hope of having some friends lend a helping hand to help us move or we will have to hire a company which is costly. We only just started pricing out things and with the amount we are asking for, we think it will cover most of these expenses. I have created several fundraising campaigns in the past mainly for my artistic endeavors, so I am already feeling ashamed for asking further financial help but as this is for our living, I would hope that some of you can help us finally start our lives anew. This year marks my 10th year here in France and our 10-year wedding anniversary so what better time for this to occur?

Any help that you can give would be a blessing. Remember that if each of you only gives a little amount, that can go so far. Crowd-funding means just that - lots of little hands/hearts together making a big difference. I thank each and every one of you, in advance, for taking the time to read this and if you simply can not help we completely understand because we know how hard it has been on so many. Bonjour à tous et toutes. Je m'appelle AnnMarie Tornabene-Boivin et je suis une artiste new-yorkaise qui s'est installée en France il y a dix ans pour épouser Gilles, mon mari français. Même si cela ressemble à un conte de fées devenu réalité, et c'est le cas à bien des égards, j'ai dû faire face à des difficultés constantes, en particulier en ce qui concerne l'argent. N'ayant jamais appris une autre langue de ma vie, j'ai encore aujourd'hui du mal à apprendre le français. Oui, heureusement, avec des leçons, une immersion constante en vivant ici, ainsi qu'avec mon travail et mes interactions sociales, j'ai progressé, mais c'est toujours une lutte, en particulier pour comprendre tout ce que dit quelqu'un lorsqu'il parle !

Cela dit, je m'épanouis dans de nombreux domaines. Je travaille régulièrement (avec le calendrier scolaire) en tant que modèle d'artiste, ce qui est ma profession principale depuis plus de 28 ans, et une grande partie de ce travail a été effectué avec des écoles et des ateliers avec lesquels j'ai commencé ici en France il y a 10 ans. J'ai déjà participé à plusieurs expositions de photographie et mon travail photographique n'a jamais cessé. Sur le plan social, bien que j'aie très peu d'amis ici, j'ai rencontré et suis régulièrement en contact avec un grand nombre de personnes chaleureuses grâce à mon travail, et j'ai toujours été capable d'être quelque peu indépendante en faisant des choses seules, et j'ai pu continuer à le faire ici en France.

Bien sûr, ce n'est pas sans remercier mon merveilleux mari pour son aide constante, son amour, sa patience et son soutien, en particulier dans les moments extrêmement difficiles et stressants (comme avec l'administration française !) Il a été mon roc, ma constante.

Pour ce qui est de son histoire, Gilles est un technicien audiovisuel/spécialiste du monde de la post-production cinématographique. Il a travaillé sur de nombreux films et séries, des concerts, des publicités et bien plus encore, y compris les deux principaux films d'animation d'Astérix et de nombreux films français et internationaux. Après avoir passé plus de 25 ans à plein temps dans ce secteur, il a décidé d'ajouter une corde à son arc en devenant traducteur professionnel, ce qui était un choix logique vue sa pratique régulière de l’anglais dans son travail et sa passion pour l’écriture. Après avoir suivi une formation professionnelle et obtenu un diplôme avec distinction, il a subi un coup dur avec l'arrivée de l'intelligence artificiel dans le secteur de la traduction, à tel point qu'il n'a pas pu trouver suffisamment de travail pour subvenir à ses besoins Il est toujours technicien audiovisuel, mais désormais en free-lance. Il travaille toujours régulièrement pour deux entreprises et bénéficie d'avantages particuliers en tant qu'indépendant dans le secteur des arts et du divertissement. Cependant, il travaille moins qu'avant, tandis que mes revenus restent marginaux.

Cela dit, nous travaillons tous les deux très dur et j'ai travaillé et je continue à travailler chaque jour dans toutes mes entreprises, en essayant très fort de faire ce que je peux dans mon créneau artistique et de gagner autant d'argent que possible pour contribuer à notre subsistance.

Compte tenu de tout ce que je viens de dire, au cours des deux dernières années et demie, nos problèmes financiers ont atteint un niveau record avec des dépenses quotidiennes en hausse et lorsque Gilles était au milieu du changement de sa vie professionnelle, la situation financière était si mauvaise que nous étions sur le point d'être forcés de quitter notre appartement par notre propriétaire, mais nous avons réussi pendant cette période à faire face à des dettes importantes, avec un peu d’aide et en nous concentrant autant que possible sur les dépenses nécessaires, mais la situation ne s'améliore que très lentement. Le loyer est payé, ce qui est le plus important, mais cela ne peut pas continuer.

C'est à ce moment-là que nous avons déposé une demande de logement social. Le système est stressant en soi - il s'agit d'un système de loterie avec un algorithme étrange intégré. Sur leur site, il y a une liste d'offres dans et autour des villes/régions que vous choisissez lorsque vous créez votre dossier. Il y a parfois des photos de l'extérieur, parfois aucune, et une description de base de l'endroit (taille, nombre de chambres, etc.) et s'il y en a un qui nous plaît, que nous pouvons nous permettre et qui a tous les aspects pratiques, nous postulons sur une offre. Nous ne pouvons postuler que sur un seul appartement à la fois et attendre une réponse. Nous pouvons voir combien d'autres personnes ont fait une offre pour cet appartement et annuler si le nombre de candidats est si élevé que nous savons que nous n'aurons aucune chance. Nous avons parfois postulé pour des offres avec 250 candidatures ! Alors nous annulons, passons au suivant et si nous trouvons un appartement avec un petit nombre de candidatures, nous restons sur celui-ci et attendons à nouveau. Puis, deux semaines après la date limite, nous essuyons un refus (sans raison) et nous passons au suivant. Pendant presque 2 ans, nous avons fait tout cela avec beaucoup de déception, de tristesse et d'angoisse mais ENFIN nous avons obtenu un appartement ! Il est situé dans une ville un peu plus au sud (Brétigny-sur-Orge) mais suffisamment proche pour que nous puissions travailler à Paris et en région parisienne. En fait, la gare n'est qu'à quelques minutes à pied de notre appartement et il y a un bus juste devant notre complexe.

Bien que ce soit une bonne nouvelle, le petit appartement est une coquille vide avec SEULEMENT les toilettes, la douche, le lavabo de la salle de bain et l'évier de la cuisine. Nous avons dû remplacer notre réfrigérateur depuis un certain temps déjà, et nous n'avons jamais eu de four en état de marche auparavant ; nous devons donc rapatrier la partie de notre équipement qui est encore viable et remplacer/investir dans de nouveaux équipements essentiels adaptés à ce nouvel espace (comme le réfrigérateur, la cuisinière-four, un nouveau sommier, des meubles/articles de rangement). Il y a aussi la camionnette de déménagement, avec l'espoir que des amis nous donnent un coup de main pour nous aider à déménager, sinon nous devrons faire appel à une entreprise, ce qui est coûteux. Nous venons tout juste de commencer à évaluer les prix et nous pensons que le montant que nous demandons couvrira la plupart de ces dépenses. J'ai créé plusieurs campagnes de collecte de fonds dans le passé, principalement pour mes projets artistiques, alors je me sens déjà honteuse de demander une aide financière supplémentaire, mais comme il s'agit de notre vie, j'espère que certains d'entre vous pourront nous aider à enfin recommencer notre vie. Cette année marque ma dixième année en France et notre dixième anniversaire de mariage.

Toute aide que vous pourriez apporter serait une bénédiction. Rappelez-vous que si chacun d'entre vous donne un petit montant, cela peut aller très loin. Le crowdfunding, c'est justement cela : beaucoup de petites mains et de grands cœurs réunis pour faire une énorme différence.
