On our ICU rotation, we had the honor of caring for Mrs. Margarita Garcia in her final week of life before she passed away tragically secondary to COVID-19. She had contracted the virus while pregnant with her seventh child and became critically ill after giving birth, ultimately passing away on January 20, 2021. Her and her family touched our hearts, and so many others here, and upon her passing, we wanted to find a way to honor her and support her family as they grieve the loss of their beloved wife and mom. We’ve asked her children to share with us more about their mom; who she was, what she loved, and how she will be remembered by so many. We share below her story, one that has and will continue to live on through everyone she left behind:
“Margarita Garcia was born in Puebla, Mexico and spent the last 26 years living in New Jersey. After moving to the United States at 16 years old she met her husband, Asunción Garcia, who happened to be from the same small town in Mexico, and they fell in love and got married. Ever since she was a teenager, she prayed that God would give her a big family. Over the course of her 22 years married to Mr. Garcia, she was granted those desires by giving birth to seven children, most recently one month ago.
Her life was marked by a deep faith in God and a generous and selfless heart towards others. She was known widely in the community for having an open-door policy, welcoming any and everyone at any time into her home. She always made a few extra portions when she would cook, just in case someone stopped by and was hungry. And this was not in vain, for it seemed there was always someone who would come by and be blessed by her hospitality. People were drawn to her and knew that they always had a home with her.
Though at times she and her family did not have a lot financially, she was always the first to continue to give generously to anyone in need. She was the first to show up to people’s home when they had a baby or when someone passed away with a warm meal and an even warmer hug. Apart from being selfless, sacrificial and radically generous, she also had an incredible sense of humor and was always making those around her laugh. Her laugh was contagious, and she brought joy to every room she entered.
She was a woman of strength and persistence. She would never shy away from telling the truth, even when it was hard, and would do so in love. She was the best advice-giver and full of wisdom. She is remembered among many by her unfailing prayer life – “when she wanted something, she would keep on praying until God answered.” She wanted a house closer to church and she prayed non-stop until she miraculously found the perfect house that they could rent to buy. She wanted a car so that she could better serve her community and she prayed until she was gifted a minivan. She was persistent, unafraid and full of faith. She left too soon, but we firmly believe she is now at home with her Creator.”
“The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord!” Job 1:21

En nuestra rotación en la Unidad de Cuidado Intensivo (ICU), tuvimos el honor de atender a la señora Margarita García en su última semana de vida antes de que falleciera trágicamente como consecuencia del COVID-19. Había contraído el virus mientras estaba embarazada de su séptimo hijo y enfermó gravemente después del parto, falleciendo finalmente el 20 de enero del 2021. Ella y su familia tocaron nuestros corazones, y los de muchos otros aquí, y tras su fallecimiento, quisimos encontrar una forma de honrarla y apoyar a su familia mientras lamentan la pérdida de su querida esposa y madre. Hemos pedido a sus hijos que compartan con nosotros más información sobre su madre; quién era, qué amaba y cómo será recordada por muchos. A continuación, compartimos su historia, una que ha vivido y seguirá viviendo a través de todos los que dejó atrás:
"Margarita García nació en Puebla, México, y pasó los últimos 26 años viviendo en Nueva Jersey. Después de mudarse a los Estados Unidos a los 16 años conoció a su esposo, Asunción García, que casualmente era del mismo pueblo de México, y se enamoraron y se casaron. Desde que era adolescente, rezaba para que Dios le diera una familia numerosa. A lo largo de sus 22 años de matrimonio con el Sr. García, se le concedieron esos deseos dando a luz a siete hijos, el último hace un mes.
Su vida estuvo marcada por una profunda fe en Dios y un corazón generoso y desinteresado hacia los demás. Era muy conocida en la comunidad por tener una política de puertas abiertas, acogiendo a todo el mundo en cualquier momento en su casa. Cuando cocinaba, siempre hacía algunas raciones de más, por si alguien pasaba por allí y tenía hambre. Y no era en vano, porque parecía que siempre había alguien que se acercaba y era bendecido por su hospitalidad. La gente se sentía atraída por ella y sabía que siempre tenía un hogar con ella.
Aunque a veces ella y su familia no tenían mucho económicamente, siempre era la primera en seguir dando generosamente a cualquiera que lo necesitara. Era la primera en presentarse en casa de la gente cuando tenía un bebé o cuando alguien fallecía con una comida caliente y un abrazo aún más cálido. Además de ser desinteresada, sacrificada y radicalmente generosa, también tenía un increíble sentido del humor y siempre hacía reír a quienes la rodeaban. Su risa era contagiosa y alegraba a donde quiera que entraba.
Era una mujer fuerte y persistente. Nunca se privaba de decir la verdad, incluso cuando era difícil, y lo hacía con amor. Era la mejor consejera y estaba llena de sabiduría. Es recordada entre muchos por su infalible vida de oración: "cuando quería algo, seguía rezando hasta que Dios le respondía". Quería una casa más cerca de la iglesia y rezó sin parar hasta que encontró milagrosamente la casa perfecta que podían alquilar para comprar. Quería un coche para poder servir mejor a su comunidad y rezó hasta que se le regalo una miniván. Era persistente, no tenía miedo y estaba llena de fe. Se fue demasiado pronto, pero creemos firmemente que ahora está en casa con su Creador."
