Xochi was being persecuted in her home country of El Salvador. She lived in constant fear for her life watching murder after murder of many members of the transgender community there (https://www.huffpost.com/entry/el-salvador-transgender-murders_n_58dac266e4b01ca7b4278e8a). She fled, seeking refuge in the United States, where she hoped she could live as her true self and without fear for her safety and health.
After spending over eight months in a detention center in New Mexico, the conditions of which Xochi describes as "horrible," she has been released on bond to await the rest of her court hearings as an Asylum Seeker.
She will be living with our family for the next several months and does not have any possessions or any money to her name.
This fund will help fund Xochi's travel expenses to get to Baltimore and will help with the costs of providing her the basic necessities of life in Baltimore. It will also help fund transportation to ICE appointments, medical, dental, and psychological care, communications needs, legal representation, educational needs, etc. Xochi is legally unable to work in our country and has suffered great trauma during her time in El Salvador, her journey to the United States, and while in a U.S. Federal Detention Center.
