Save the Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica

Donation protected

The Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica hides within the lush rainforests of Costa Rica's Caribbean coastline. Getting there is no small task: it takes over 12 hours from most large cities.

From some years, I have supported the Sanctuary's work on environmental preservation and research. There are numerous non-profits focused on "sexy" animals like tigers and elephants but only one devoted to sloths.

Perhaps, sloths can teach us something. Many of us, live a Type-A-lifestyle:  studying hard for years to enter a top college, working late nights in our careers, trying to accumulate successes.  Do we pause along the way to consider if that treadmill brings happiness?

I believe sloths offer an alternative world view. People call them "slow" but maybe I can convince you otherwise.

- Sloths leisurely munch on leaves and twigs for energy.
- They don't run around all day so their energy needs are low.
- And because of their bark-colored hair they are hard to spot for predators from above.
- By doing so little, the sloths satisfy their needs and evade danger.

In other words, sloths aren't "slow" they're efficient.

Which species is the biggest threat to sloths? It's us, humans.

The Sloth Sanctuary  , founded by Judy Avey-Arroyo, rescues and provides medical care for hundreds of sloths. Additionally, research at its facilities have rapidly increased our knowledge of the species and its environment. (You can imagine that studying sloths in the wild is... slow.)

The Sanctuary is part of Costa Rica's booming eco-tourism industry. Each year, visitors from every continent trek into the rainforest to visit the hidden oasis. These tourists provide the funding for the Sanctuary's education, conservation and research efforts.

But 2020 has been a near-zero year for Costa Rican eco-tourism. As a result, the Sanctuary may shut its doors by the end of this year.

Fortunately, sloths are low-maintenance house guests: just plant them a few tasty trees and they're content.

With only $5,000 we can keep the lights on through year-end -- giving breathing room until tourists come back in 2021.

Friends: We can do this together! And I will match whatever you donate.

With the US elections, Black Lives Matter, and the tragedy in Beirut there are so many important causes requiring our attention in 2020. Donate to those too! I would also love to hear about the causes you care about -- please reach out to me directly.

To me, protecting the environment and supporting research are worthy aims. Costa Rica's model of eco-tourism is self-sustaining but 2020 is a one-time crisis. Our support can make all the difference.

If these are goals you share, consider helping the Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica through this tough year.

To all my friends, be well... and learn something from the sloths.
