On Friday, June 19th Adam Smyth took his daughter Haygen (age 3) and son Jackson (age 2) to the playground where they enjoyed themselves for 2 hours while mom Stephanie was at work. Within hours of this pleasant outing Adam began the fight of his life.
Adam is the husband of Stephanie Wine Smyth, daughter of Mark and Suzanne Wine of Burnsville. Adam's parents are Candy Jack Smyth and Mark Smyth both of Sutton. After being laid off from his mining job Adam took on the role of Mr. Mom while Stephanie continued to work as a Respiratory Therapist at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital. The arrangement was working well and Adam was doing a great job as primary caregiver for the children. Everything was going nicely for the young family until they returned home from the playground that Friday.
After a series of conversations with his wife and brother Dustin, Adam drove himself and the children to Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital ER to be checked out. It was discovered at that time that Adam's platelets were critically low and he had a small brain bleed. Adam was transferred to Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown where his condition quickly deteriorated. The doctors told the family he has Acute Promyeloctic Leukemia a M3 subtype of Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. Adam was admitted to the SICU and put on life support. Typically the leukemia Adam has is very treatable. Unfortunately his wasn't discovered until late stage and is further complicated by the issues in his head and lungs. The family was told that Adam was in critical condition and "the prognosis is grim." At the time of this writing Adam has been in the hospital for almost 4 days and the prognosis has not changed. The family has been told that it is an hour to hour situation.
Stephanie has enough leave at work to be with Adam for two weeks. Her job is secure thankfully and she can spend this precious time with her husband but she has no salary and few leave days because she depleted everything when she had her sweet baby boy.
This is where you can help. If you have the means and would like to help take a small amount of stress and worry from this young family it would be very appreciated. Stephanie is spending all of her time at the hospital with Adam and will continue to do so until the doctors declare him not critical. The doctors have said the next days are crucial and that the biggest worry at this time is that Adam could bleed internally into his GI tract.
Your contribution to the Hopeful Heart Fund will go directly to the family and be used for typical household bills and the portion of the medical expenses not covered by insurance (20% of total bill) while Stephanie stays by her husband's side. If funds are raised in exess of that it will be saved for when Adam gets well and comes home. Even if all his current medical problems stabilize there will be a lengthy period of rehab and recovery. They do have a very small savings account but with no income coming in it will be gone very quickly.
If you can contribute it will be deeply appreciated. If you are unable to contribute financially, please keep the family in your prayers. They are finding comfort in the power of prayer and are amazed at how far Adam's prayer chain has reached.
Thank you for your continued prayers and good wishes. The family is grateful for the support they are receiving.
