My name is Suleky Roman - I am from Washington Heights, NYC and I have been an event coordinator and planner for over 9 years. Since the pandemic I have developed a new desire and skill set for wanting to be a licensed cosmetologist. I have noticed a lack of hair salons and hair professionals in high end industries that do not focus on Ethnic Hair - my passion is curly hair. I want to become a licensed practicing hair stylist. Due to the pandemic I lost a lot of work for event planning and have lost clients. I had to think about another trade I enjoy.
As I started to explore hair, isten to podcast and even began washing/styling and nurturing hair in my home - my passion grew!
I have applied to the top Cosmetology school in Manhattan, NY and I want to use the skill set I obtain to pursue a career in the field. 3 main goals will be to open a shop in my community, provide services to homeless shelters especially those who want to go on interviews, and lastly educate people with the skills I have to nurture their natural hair; specifically curly hair. I want to be able to help my Dominican/Latinx community in learning their hair and embracing it.
I think it is easy to just dive in and not have the proper credentials but I want to learn from top experts in an amazing way - I have always been a hands on person and would love to shift careers.
The tuition for the 8 month credited program is $18k. I am going to be able to do a payment plan and am going to be given partial credit but $2k of that is due upfront for the Fall 2020 session. I have not been able to work and the help would be amazing coming from my friends and family.
To everyone who gives I know you believe in me and I want to update everyone in my journey. The money will help with tuition, pay my loan if approved, and lastly help with transportation to the school when I need to go in for hands-on learning.
