Project HEAL, which stands for Project Health, Education and Learning, is a longterm partnership between UF College of Medicine and the Ecuadorian government. Over the past 16 years it has helped provide targeted and sustainable improvements in rural health service delivery to Amazonian and Andrean villages outside Quito, Ecuador. By working with local leadership (who specify the needs of a given community), Project HEAL is able to respond with resources that appropriately correspond to the actual needs of those they serve. This integration of local Ecuadorian government, local non-profit organization, local physicians and UF health students, we are able to help deliver high quality medical care to patients while also learning from and teaching each other. We recognize that meeting both upstream and downstream needs is important to meaningfully changing the landscape of medical access in low-resource settings. I believe the organizational framework of Project HEAL aims to do just that.
