Who is Jo Anne?
Jo Anne Yon has devoted her life to helping and healing in Nicaragua. She spent seven years there as the director of MMI (Medical Ministry International) traveling through the country and bringing teams of medical volunteers to clinics she organized in places where there was little healthcare. The last two years in Nicaragua, she focused on dental clinics because she realized that poor dental care was causing many different types of preventable health problems for the impoverished in Nicaragua.
What does Jo Anne need?
Jo Anne needs a 4WD vehicle to get to remote villages to assess the medical needs of Nicaraguans and transport medical and dental teams to the people. She would like to purchase a Toyota Hilux. It’s not available in the US, but can be purchased in Nicaragua. Why purchase the vehicle there? Replacement parts for this vehicle are readily available in Nicaragua because it is a popular vehicle in that country.
The roads can be a challenge in Nicaragua. Only about one-third of the paved roads are in “good” condition, and only one in ten are paved. All other roads are classified as either “marginal” or “poor.” In other words, Jo Anne is riding on some rough terrain getting to the neediest people. A four-wheel drive vehicle is essential to her work!
What’s the timeline?
After four years back in the States and three working as a Spanish Medical Interpreter for Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, Virginia, Jo Anne has an opportunity to return to her beloved Nicaragua in just a few month. She will be the Outreach Coordinator for Tesoros de Dios (God’s Treasures), an organization that helps Nicaraguan children with disabilities and severe handicaps. She’s also planning to renew her work with dental clinics and her goal is to develop a self-sustaining mobile dental program to be run BY Nicaraguans FOR Nicaraguans. Jo Anne leaves for Nicaragua in April 2018. We need your donations to make sure she has the funds to buy the vehicle and continue her important work.
