Rally for Lawrence: Encephalitis Recovery Fundraiser

In November 2023, our lives changed dramatically when Lawrence was admitted to the ICU with a severe RSV infection and hyponatremia. Despite his discharge on November 23, his condition worsened, leading to multiple emergency room visits. On December 6, 2023 Lawrence was diagnosed with viral meningoencephalitis after experiencing confusion, memory loss, and vision problems. He spent the entire month of December 2023 in and out of the hospital as his first team of doctors did not provide adequate care or treatment for the encephalitis.

On December 24, 2023 we finally found a capable medical team, and Lawrence was hospitalized until January 1, 2024. Since then, his recovery has been slow due to the infection's impact on his brain's executive functioning, which affects his ability to plan, focus, and complete tasks.

By November 2024, Lawrence's progress had slowed significantly and our team of doctors were stumped. We sought specialized care at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, which is renowned for treating encephalitis. After reviewing Lawrence's medical disposition, they agreed to accept him as a patient. In January 2025, we made the journey to the Mayo Clinic, which we paid for out of pocket. After extensive tests and consultations, Lawrence received a comprehensive diagnosis and treatment plan. While his prognosis is positive, recovery will take time and requires ongoing cognitive therapy.

Lawrence is a hardworking man who loves his family, his friends, his job and his colleagues. Despite his efforts to return to work, he is currently unable to do so due to the damage caused by the infection. He is now attending cognitive therapy to relearn essential skills.

Our goal is for Lawrence to regain his health, return to work, and resume activities he loves, such as fishing, camping, woodworking, and home projects. We are in the process of securing long-term disability through his employer, which will provide approximately 66% of his pay.

Any donations will greatly assist with Lawrence's medical and rehabilitation therapy costs. Thank you for reading our story and being a part of our lives. Your support means the world to us!
