Brandy's Story:
We adopted Brandy from Pet Harbor rescue in Virginia in 2020 during COVID and serves as an emotional support animal at home. She became a part of our family in Baltimore and moved with us to Denver in 2022. She loves our first-floor apartment and watching all the pups on walks from our street-side window.
Brandy loves the snow, chasing bunnies around campus, and hiking in the Rockies. When we adopted her, she kept her distance but has turned into the most cozy cuddle pup and will ask you for her spot on the sofa. She enjoys fetch, especially if she chases and you bring the toy back for her. While hospitalized, we've missed her howls echoing through the apartment asking for dinner or a potty break.
Brandy is the most gentle husky. She gives kisses to say sorry and will carefully pick treats out of your hand. If it's past the time for a potty break, she reminds us by sitting her head in our lap and gentle kisses. Bacon is a coveted sometimes treat, and she'll ask for a shake even if you didn't know you were offering anything. If you're upset, Brando is right there to provide love and comfort.
Brandy's Care and Needs:
Brandy is hospitalized at the VCA Alameda East Veterinary Hospital critical care unit for burns in her tongue and esophagus following exposure to a caustic chemical, as well as aspiration pneumonia. Her care is intensive and will require careful follow up, but she's fighting her hardest to come home. During her visit, she's needed IV medications for pain and infection, a tracheostomy, supplemental oxygen, and a tube for nutrition.
Because Brandy's care is so intensive and healing will be a long process, Brandy's care and recovery will require support for an extended time. We are hoping to receive support from her daycare to help, however, we are using our resources in the meantime to allow her body the time it needs in the ICU. As students these resources are limited, and we know her care expenses will continue even after the time if and when the doctor is comfortable discharging her.
