On the morning of June 18th, a fire started in the backyard of 1421 Fairfield Rd. and quickly spread into the house, where my friend Jenni and her son, Unai, have been living for the past five years (since Unai was a baby).
I was staying with Jenni at the time of the fire, and when she called me to let me know what had happened, she was more concerned for my belongings than her own.
"Most of your stuff is safe because it was in the back room," she said, "but it will probably have smoke damage... I'll pay to have everything cleaned."
"What about your stuff?" I asked
"Most of it's gone" she stated, matter of factly.
"But... what will you do?"
"I'll survive."
This is Jenni in a nutshell.
When I met her, about 4 years ago, I didn't know much about her, but I could tell that she was fierce. A wild and beautiful spirit, with a big heart and a boundless resiliency.
Jenni has been a full-time student and a full-time single mother since Unai was born. Unai's father lives in Bosnia and has been unable to provide financial support of any kind over the years. Last year, Jenni did not renew her tenant's insurance due to financial difficulties.
She lost almost everything in the fire. Many of the things she lost can never be replaced.
For Jenni and Unai, 1421 Fairfield Rd. was more than just an address. It was a place to call home.
Although Jenni would never ask for help, we completely disregarded her wishes (haha) and created this campaign to appeal to people who can offer any kind of support to Jenni and Unai in their time of need. And remember - ANY LITTLE BIT HELPS!
Since my friends have not yet found another place to live, financial support is the most effective way to offer your assistance.
Thank you so much for your consideration. For further information about donating, please contact Claire Horwood at [email redacted]
