Last year I spent a month volunteering in a remote village called Nzcele in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Each day we taught students that were bright, curious, and determined—but lacked educational resources and individual attention.

The students are from the Xhosa community, and English is a crucial gateway for further education and future opportunities. I volunteered alongside Roland and Anjo, and we lived in huts called rondavels, walking to the school every day. We worked one-on-one with students to practise reading and speaking, build confidence, and give the kind of focused support that’s hard to get in overcrowded classrooms.

Since then, the program has been able to expand its tutoring by employing local women as paid tutors—creating local jobs and trusted role models while keeping the support consistent and community-led. This has made it possible to bring tutoring to many local schools, and the demand keeps growing as more teachers, families, and students see the difference regular one-on-one help can make.

We’re raising funds to provide stipends for local women to work as teachers, tutoring children in English in their schools. These stipends mean women can commit time and care to regular lessons, and children get consistent practice, encouragement, and stronger English skills—so they can access the next steps in education with more opportunity.
