Many of you already know my story, but here’s some more detail. I was born with Spina Bifida- Hydrocephalus. The corrective measures at that time we’re to place a shunt and valve system in my brain to drain any excess fluids. At age 2 the system stopped working and my natural system took over. I have not any issues with Hydrocephalus or any other Spina Bifida related issues from that point, until now.

In early May of 2020, I woke up to an excruciating headache that didn't go away but progressively got worse. With help from a family friend, I was put in touch with a local primary care physician who decided that an MRI was needed. The result came back that the shunt had broken off and was pushing into my brain. I was referred to a specialist at Barrow Neurological Center, where the neurosurgeon confirmed what my primary care physician already expected, the shunt had a piece broken off and was pushing into the brain and it would have to be removed. On August 12, 2020, I had the surgery to remove the system, however, that was not the end of the story.

On September 1, 2020, I went in for the Post Op MRI, and then met with the neurosurgeon again. He discovered a calcified lesion of the left hemispheric part of the brain that is causing continued pressure and pain and needs to be removed.

The earliest available surgery time is September 21, 2020. After this surgery, there is an estimated 8 weeks of additional recovery time.

The usual bills keep coming and the medical bills keep mounting up, so I am asking for help in any way possible. Any type of surgery, especially when it deals with the brain, faces tremendous costs and I hope that this fund will alleviate some of the burdens that this unexpected circumstance has created.

Thank you so much for all of your help and support!
