Please Help Bitey

UPDATED: We have hit our goal; thank you ALL SO MUCH for helping us with Bitey. He's doing much better, and now we can focus on his mitral valve problem. He's having more tests in December to see how he's tolerating the medication, and again we thank you all so very very much. The outpouring of kindness was overwhelming!

UPDATED June 25, 2015: We are asking for your help, dear friends. Our beloved Bitey was injured while playing, and has lost the use of his back legs. We are in shock.

He was taken to the best small animal clinic in northern California (UC Davis), and they have told us that surgery is the BEST option. The procedure is $7000, and we've exhausted every effort to come up with even close to this total. Even if the window for surgery closes, we'll need this money to care for him, and give him the best life possible.

We decided to follow UC Davis' advice, and go for the surgery, so we took Bitey back for pre surgical bloodwork and a heart checkup including EKG. They called us that evening, and told us that they'd discovered a mitral valve problem with him (severity 4/6), that could complicate surgery considerably; as in the risk is increased that he may not survive being put under. We went back, and picked him up right away (surgery was scheduled for the next day). We were SO ready to go with the surgical path based on the advice of UC Davis professionals, and our local vet in a second opinion. We were told he'd make a 95% recovery this way. He's been SO active his entire life that we wanted that for him so badly.

Our course of action, now, is to wait 4-6 weeks and see if Bitey can improve on his own. It IS a possiblility that he will walk; he sure is trying to  during his 2 minute bathroom breaks. We have him under complete rest, otherwise. He doesn't understand.

He needs more bloodwork on July 1. It's amazing how quickly you can go through $300, $500, $800 with a medical problem like this.... We're back to Davis in a month for another heart checkup and spinal check. We are going to look into acupuncture locally. The expenses are piling up. He's been placed on heart medication (for the rest of his life at $800 annually), and we are on a 'wait and see' in the hopes that he will improve or stay the same. Davis says that if he declines, they would suggest we go for the surgery; that it will be his best chance. 'Declines' basically means that he can lose his ability to relieve himself, which can cause all sorts of complications...

We're still asking to make the $7000 as we're already in this up to our ears, financially, and have exhausted all resources in this attempt to give him the life he deserves. We can't let Bitey down.

PLEASE HELP us take care of our boy. Most of you know Tammy and I to be honest and trustworthy people, and we would not be coming to you this way if it wasn't absolutely necessary.

Thank you for any help you can give us.
