Erica's Car Repair/Chimalma Funds

UPDATE: I had some news today that has changed my funding goals. The first is that my insurance is only willing to cover the damage to the interior. While I could certainly try to fight it by hook and by crook and by social media and possibly even lawyering up, at the end of the day it would take more time and cost me more potential income than it would be worth. And that’s assuming I was successful.

The second bit of news is a bit more complicated. My mechanic is confident that with a little extra money, he can get Red up and running again AND fix the repairs to the interior and window. I would so much rather pay a fellow local small businessman the money and get it ALL fixed than give an insurance company the money and not even be left with a working vehicle.

That said, my mechanic also thinks she won’t last more than another year at best. And if enough parts can’t be found through salvage, the cost of it would also be more than what my poor girl is even worth. It will be a few days before I know what that cost will be.

Although the full cost of fixing Red is still up in the air, if I meet my new goal, it will likely cover most of it and buy me another unsteady year to save and plan for a new used vehicle. And if the cost of the repairs is more than what we raise, I’ll at least have a decent start towards a beater that's slightly newer, more reliable, and ultimately cheaper to run and maintain.

I am grateful beyond measure that the support given to me so far has even made this possible.

My car isn't that great. She's old enough to vote. She has over 260,000 miles on its odometer. She almost always smells kind of funny thanks to years of lovely catering deliveries and not-so-lovely supply run mishaps soaking into her very atoms. Her air conditioning is hit or miss, which is less than ideal when one lives in the desert.

But she's paid for. She's mine. She's helped me get to work and, more importantly, do my job helping to rebuild my family's small business. And when she broke down, I stupidly didn't think anything of leaving her in the parking lot at work overnight while my mobile mechanic was sourcing the $60 part Red needed to get going again.

So of course some thieving bastards smashed her window, ripped apart her dash, and stole and broke parts from under her hood for good measure.

Unfortunately, after a series of unexpected expenses, including emergency dental bills for myself and vet bills for my late Sophie, I'm in no place to meet the $1,000 insurance deductible.

Fortunately, I have incredible friends who have offered to help me get Red back on her feet. I'm hoping if we can raise at least half of the deductible, figuring out how to get the rest won't feel so damn impossible.

Thank you for your support. Thank you.
