If you live, study or work at CSU Monterey Bay, if you live in Marina, or if you have known me over the last 10 years, than you probably have met Darrell.
Darrell is an energetic, outgoing, and friendly guy. He is one of the hardest working I know, having spent the entirety of his academic career juggling a full class load and a busy work schedule. Darrell has always had my back, and as charasmatic as he is, he leaves an impression on everyone he meets.
Right now, Darrell is suffering from a hereditary case of congestive heart failure. A seemingly routine visit to the Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula for what he thought was a cold turned into a helicopter ride to Stanford Medical Center, where he currently resides.
Darrell will possibly have to spend several months at Stanford, and will likely have to receive some combination of a mechanical pump for his heart, and ideally a new heart entirely. Darrell has rare blood type O, meaning that donors are hard to find, and the wait for this heart could take a few years (the doctor indicated as many as four). After this he will likely face continuous costs for routine visits and subsequent surgeries.
In the mean time, Darrell must remain connected to an IV to survive. This is my first time doing something like this. I'm not sure what the appropriate amount of money to raise is, so here's a guess. If you can't give, Darrell could use some visitors, or at the very least a phone call or a friend to chat with.
