My name is Kevin. On the 22nd of June, 2025, my family’s life changed forever.  I got the call all parents dread to ever get.  “Sir,” the policeman said, “we have your kids.  We had to take them into custody, and your children’s mom is going to prison.  She is being charged with child cruelty in the first degree (2 counts)and deprivation of sustenance.” (2counts) Two months prior to this, my children’s mother took my car and left with my kids (ages 10, 9, and 1). I did not know how to reach them, and she blocked any contact.  One week before the police call, she messaged me and I scheduled a time to go and get my children, but then I never heard back from her.

 

We were never married, but DNA testing proves that all three of the children are mine.  Now I must go through a process to be “legitimized” as their legal father to obtain custody (they are currently in a foster home).  This is going to be a long and costly process.  I am an honest, hard-working, employed person, but establishing a new household for my family is stretching my ability to afford the legal counsel I need to represent me in court.
