A few months ago my sister, Danielle,  found a lump in her breast. Here is her story from her Facebook post on August 8th.

‘Because I’m such an open person and want everyone to know what’s going on with my breast cancer journey together, here it is...

I know a lot of people know and i’m happy about that!!! I never have wanted this to be a secret, I just wanted to wait until I knew my full plan before I shared my story. If you get anything out of this it is that you are never too young to have breast cancer and follow through with your self exams because you just never know...

In March/April I felt a lump, but thought it was just hormonal. Around this time was when Aj and I started dieting and working out, so Aj didn’t have to get a c-pap , but thank god we did because I lost 13lbs and of course my boobs were the first to go! When June came around and I realized it again, I finally forced myself to call the doctor. I got in that day-you say lump in your breast in a 33yo and people move quickly! My Gyno was not concerned, thought it was a fibroid, but said lets follow through with testing. Two days later I had a Mammo and US. Having studied breast ultrasound I knew as soon as the tech put the probe down, but the surgeon assured me that fibroids can also look like that and he too was not concerned with how palpable it was.

-7/13 I had a biopsy

-7/20 was the day I got the horrible phone call.

My work family was with me and I love them just as much as my real family-their support is absolutely amazing

I am so thankful to work at a small hospital because I have a great relationship with so many people and they are such an amazing team that have worked so quickly to make sure I got ALL of my testing done within a few days.

I have the most amazing support team behind me and without a doubt I know I will be fine because honestly, I have no other option!!
I refuse not to be there for my children and let’s be serious, Aj cannot live without me.
Thank you so much to everyone who has reached out!! I love talking to people about it because it’s very real and I want to make people aware. I have very good days and also really bad days. No one can truly prepare you for all the emotions, but for the most part I try and stay smiling because what is crying all the time going to do?!

After meeting with several doctors I chose Penn to have my surgery and reconstruction.. and found an awesome oncologist locally, who happens to be my neighbor!!

Everything truly fell into place and I feel blessed with the most amazing team.. this is going to be a long 6 months, but I’m ready to give it my all!!

As silly as it sounds I will really miss my hair. Everyone knows how much I love going to get my hair done every 8 weeks, but for now i will make sure it looks fabulous everyday, then I will try every wig I can find until it’s long enough for extensions. As long as I get rid of this and I’m here for my kids that’s all the matters...
Thank you to everyone who has reached out, sent wine, cards, jewelry, cookies, ice cream etc..!!! By the time I start chemo I may have gained back my weight lol‘

Danielle had a double mastectomy with partial reconstruction on September 3rd.  She is home resting with her beautiful Family; her husband and high school sweetheart Aj, her daughter Eva (5), her son Landon (2) and our Mom, Kathy (age not necessary lol).

With the help of The Recovery Chair,

https://www.therecoverychair.org/

Danielle can rest a bit easier.

As of right now Danielle’s treatment is not being covered 100% because she went with HUP and not the hospital she works for. Danielle will also have to incur the cost of Cobra in January for the remainder of her chemo months.

Danielle is going to try Cold capping to preserve the loss of her hair. https://www.breastcancer.org/tips/hair_skin_nails/cold-caps

The outpouring of love and support has been Tremendous. Knowing we are not alone makes all the difference!
Thank you from Our Family to Yours!
