Hello,
My name is Gaby, and I am creating this fundraiser for my mother, Amy, who will be having brain surgery on June 1st, 2023. On an unexpected trip to the ER for an unrelated head trauma, we found out that she has a cerebral aneurysm.
Since then, we have had better images to determine that she has not 1 but 3 aneurysms on the left carotid artery. With the risk factors, area, and sizes, they have quickly moved her to surgery on all 3. They will have to clip them all which is the best long-term solution. This will mean opening her skull and brain surgery.
The recovery time for this is estimated to be 6 weeks before she can get back to work, but even then, the nature of this surgery could mean much longer (especially if there are complications). During this time she will have FMLA. Unfortunately, she does not qualify for paid leave. This means that during surgery and post-op, she will be unable to work and cover any immediate short-term bills (rent, utilities, loan repayments).
Due to her insurance coverage, she is also going to receive some outrageous out-of-pocket expenses. For the diagnostic cerebral angiogram alone, a procedure to get a better look at the aneurysms to discuss treatment, the out-of-pocket expenses after insurance is nearly $9,000.
I will be there to help my mom cover some bills and will have to help her during post-op recovery. There is no way we can weather this storm without a lot of financial help. My sister will also be taking 3 weeks off from work to help with caregiving, which means that she will lose income during this time.
This fundraiser is to help cover bills that will not stop needing to be paid while she pauses to focus on a much-needed recovery from such a big surgery. The pie-in-the-sky is that medical expenses can be covered (which may very well go above 20k). Please donate if you are willing and able.
We appreciate any support during this incredibly stressful time.
