In December I noticed my dog began to limp so I took him to a vet in San Francisco the vet took X-rays and said Blue had torn his ACL and needed a TPLO surgery. I was charged a total of $7000 for the surgery, X-rays, blood work, and medicines. I noticed that he was not healing as expected and he was still in a lot of pain so I made an appointment to be seen again. They took another set of X-rays and told me Blue had cancer or a possible infection and his leg needed to be amputated right away. I cried and had so many questions as to why he did not see the cancer before and how all of a sudden it appeared on the last set of X-rays. As a family, we decided to seek second a opinion.

I took blue to another vet to see what their take was on blue’s current condition. There the vet confirmed by looking at his first set of X-rays (taken by the first vet) that blue had cancer in his femur bone prior to doing the TPLO surgery. The second vet confirmed that Blue did not require the first surgery and that the first vet should have seen the cancer in the first set of X-rays and proceeded with the leg amputation. With this new information, I decided to no longer have Blue treated with the first vet. As hard as it was we decided as a family to go through with the amputation with the second vet since he had brought more clarity to Blues medical situation. The cost for the amputation was another $8000. This has been an emotional rollercoaster for me given that my dog has been through two major surgeries in the past two months. It has not only been emotionally hard for me but also a financial strain on me and my parents. My parents had to take out a care credit to pay for Blues second surgery.
