Dear Family & Friends,
Many of you have reached out to us during this tough time and we want you to know how much we appreciate it.
On Sunday, September 27th, while on his annual fly fishing trip in Montana, Scott wasn't feeling well and went to the ER. Upon doing several tests and a CT scan, the doctors discovered three tumors in his brain. Needless to say, this was very scary news especially when he was told that he needed brain surgery as soon as possible.
Scott's company got him home on a jet immediately and took him to Vanderbilt. It was a whole different world at Vanderbilt versus the hospital in Montana and we knew it was the right decision to get him back home for the surgery.
The surgery was a success and they removed two of the three tumors. One was the size of a lemon. The doctor called Scott a rock star for being able to function with tumors that large in his brain. The third tumor was in a difficult position and couldn't be removed surgically.
On Tuesday of this week, Scott had a PET scan which determined that the cancer is metastatic melanoma. Metastatic melanoma is melanoma that travels from one part of the body to others. There are some lymph nodes which are affected and a spot on his lungs, but doctors have advised us that our number one priority right now is taking care of the third remaining tumor. We will do this with radiation and drug therapy. However, Scott can't start the radiation until the steroid therapy is complete. If we can get this tumor under control, then we can begin to treat other affected sites.
This has already been an emotional rollercoaster and we've just started. Scott continues to crack jokes and is his usual self. He is able to walk outside and do just about everything except drive.
Since we are still processing all of this and doctors have warned us of the seriousness of infection, we are laying low just with the family. That's the main reason that we created this caringbridge site. Everyone wants to know what's going on and how he is and this is a great place to give updates.
Please know that all of your texts, calls, prayers, and good vibes are such a support.
Love,
Betsy
