My name is Xochitl Nuño, and I am an 18-year-old student completing my senior year at David Douglas High School. My world has always revolved around art. For the first 4 years of my life, I found myself non-verbal, having been placed on the Autism Spectrum at an early age. Art, however, was something that I was always drawn to due to the lack of linguistic boundaries. The works of Latino artists such as Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and local artist Hampton Rodriguez have always decorated my living room walls, art becoming my first language due to my upbringing. I have recently been given the opportunity to observe the work of other creatives as I have been recognized by Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for my skill on a National level.
I was awarded a National Gold Medal in Drawing by Scholastic, and I have been invited to attend the National Ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Unfortunately, attending this ceremony will mean missing out on my graduation as both events are being held on June 9th, but I believe that this is an opportunity for an enriching artistic experience. I have decided that for this reason, I will be attending the award ceremony. I am, of course, writing this request as my family does not have the means to fully fund this trip—given the high price point of the New York experience. Any and all donations would mean the world to me.
Best,
